Interview

This is an interview with Katherine Kinnick, director of the Joint Enrollment Honors Program. You'll be able to hear about the program directly from the source.

What happens to students who don't excel in the JEHP program?

If a professor notifies me that a JEHP student is doing poorly in their classes, I send a letter to the student and to the student's high school guidance counselor. The letter documents what the problem is and warns that the student needs to improve their grade to earn a "C" or higher, or the student may jeopardize their graduation from high school.

How are the costs calculated for ACCELL program and tuition payment for classes?

Accel will pay for whatever a state school's tuition is. If you go to a private school, Accel will pay a flat amount to help out with tuition, same as with the HOPE Scholarship.

What times of the year do you recommend the JEHP students talk to their many counselors?

JEHP student must first meet with their counselors after they are accepted to the program so that they can complete a Consent Form listing the classes the student needs to graduate. Then the student will meet with the counselor again to approve their college schedule on Part II of the Accel form. Students will have to meet with the guidance counselor each semester they are in the JEHP program, because a new Accel form is required each semester.

How is Kennesaw State's program for college students different from other colleges that may offer full early entrance to college and other similar programs?

KSU also offers full early entrance in addition to JEHP, but the SAT score requirement is higher than what is required for JEHP. JEHP makes having an early college experience accessible to a much broader range of students.

How is Kennesaw State's Joint Enrollment different from other Joint Enrollment programs?

KSU's JEHP is different from other Joint Enrollment programs in the state that are not honors programs. We require higher SAT scores than what is required by the Board of Regents and create special honors sections of courses that are available to JEHP students. These courses will be designated on KSU transcripts as honors courses.

Do these teachers hold any special certification that may be related to this program?

Beginning Fall 2006, honors sections will be taught only by members of the KSU Honors Faculty. These are faculty members who are recognized as outstanding teachers by faculty and students.

What services are offered for JEHP students that are not offered for regular KSU students?

Priority Registration is the biggest perk. You get to register before the rest of the student body, so you don't have to worry about being closed out of classes that are already full. You are also permitted to enroll in honors sections of classes.

How can parents be sure that their children are not involved in college activities that aren't suitable for high school aged teenagers? At the same time, how can parents be sure that they aren't stifling their children from getting a full college experience with the social atmosphere?

All university-sponsored events are alcohol free and are suitable for high school-aged students. We encourage JEHP students to get a taste of college life by attending KSU athletic events, participating in intramurals, attending campus lectures, KSU Day, and other activities. As a student who has paid student activity fees, you are eligible to join campus clubs, the newspaper staff, and other extracurricular activities.

How many or what percentage of students are full time JEHP students?

I would give a rough estimate of 25%.

Juniors in high school?

This year we had 5 juniors in the program.

Do you recommend half time or full time enrollment?

It depends on the student's goals. There are pros and cons to both that students should discuss with their parents and counselors.

How do you feel about starting college as a junior in high school?

Many juniors have the self-discipline and maturity for college level work, and they do very well in the program.

Can JEHP students live on campus?

Yes. We have one living on campus this year and one who will live on campus next year. Students can choose to live with freshmen in the freshmen residence halls or in the Honors Wing of University Village.
